Context: The Concept Stormtrooper inspired by conceptual illustrator Ralph McQuarrie.

This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.

This is a visual guide used for 501st costume approval, not a how-to for construction. Construction details are found at the costume's Detachment website. Measurements provided here are are generalized, and not criteria for approval. All 501st costumes are proportionate to the wearer in terms of size, fit, and scale. During evaluation, both text and images (CRL and Reference) must be considered. When in doubt about a feature of a submitted costume, GMLs should post questions in the Legion forum's DL/GML peer review section.

Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below. For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met. This Detachment defines additional, optional costuming details listed in blue and red. Please visit the Detachment website for more details on these options.


Special Notes: EVA foam & Similar materials are not approvable. Blasters are not required for legion membership per our weapons policy. A Blaster is required for level 2 and above. Armor is scaled proportionately to the wearer. 3D printed components must have no visible print lines and must be smooth for a realistic appearance. Visit the Costume FAQ page for information on the Rubies Supreme Stormtrooper costume. FX armor may not be used for Level 3 approval. FX helmet is no longer permitted for new approvals.

Helmet

  • Painted glossy White with correct markings.
  • Markings may be painted or decals.
  • Frown and Teeth painted Gray.
  • Eye Lens Dark Green or Gray/Black.
  • Aerators are White.
  • Screen inserts may be added to enhance the look.
  • White or Black, rubber 'U' channel trim may be added to the bottom of neck opening.

Neck Seal

  • The neck seal may be ribbed, smooth or a balaclava.
  • Color may be Gray, to match under armor, or Black.

Under Suit

  • A one or two piece, form fitting, under-suit.
  • Must be Gray color.
  • Charcoal or Heather Gray is recommended.

Hand Plates

  • Form fitting gloves.
  • Gray in color to match the under suit.

Chest Armor

  • Painted glossy White.
  • The chest is constructed with two pieces.
  • A lower chest plate and an upper piece covering the shoulders and neck.

Back Armor

  • Painted glossy White.
  • Extension pieces are attached to each lower side of the back plate.
  • Two recessed trapezoid shapes are present on both sides of the box section.
  • Trapezoids are painted Gray.
  • A small Red triangle may be added to the upper center of the box section.

Abdomen Armor

  • Painted glossy White.
  • The inner section of the round button is painted Gray.
  • The Abdomen armor connects to the kidney plate with Gray elastic and snaps.
  • A false split rivet is located on the surface of the armor, over each elastic connection point.
  • One near the top and one near the bottom of each side.

Kidney Armor

  • Painted glossy White.
  • The kidney armor connects to the Abdomen with grey elastic and snaps.
  • A false split rivet is located on the surface of the armor, over each elastic connection point.
  • One near the top and one near the bottom of each side.

Belt

  • Painted glossy White.
  • The belt has a total of (6) ammunition boxes as well as an additional thermal detonator attached.
  • The belt bolts to the Abdomen and kidney armor when the ammo boxes and thermal detonator are attached.

Ammunition Boxes

  • Painted glossy White.
  • (6) completely different style ammunition boxes are attached to the belt.
  • T-Nuts are added, before assembly, to attach to the belt.
  • The front right ammo box has small indented rectangles cut out of the overlapping box, before assembly.
  • The inner portion of that area is painted Gray.
  • An elbowed Zerk Fitting can be added to the top of the right side ammo box to hang the Laser Sword Hilt.

Thermal Detonator

  • Armor is painted glossy White.
  • Constructed of round, 4inch tube.
  • Large, ribbed end caps, are painted glossy white.
  • Inner dome caps are painted grey.
  • A rectangle plate, with 3 round raised dots, is attached to the thermal detonator.
  • Option One - Rectangle plate is attached to the outside of the thermal detonator.
  • Option Two - Rectangle shaped opening is cut from the thermal detonator tube and the rectangle plate is attached from the inside of the tube.

Posterior Armor

  • Armor is painted glossy white.
  • The top of the rear plate connects to the bottom of the kidney plate with (4) grey elastic straps, positioned vertically across the back.
  • The rear plate has (2) snaps on the underside, to attach the codpiece.

Codpiece

  • Armor is painted glossy White.
  • The codpiece attaches to the inside of the belt with (2) Gray elastic straps.
  • The codpice has (1) split rivet on the surface of the lower connection to hold the grey elastic strap which then attaches to the rear plate.

Thigh Armor

  • Armor is painted glossy White.
  • Armor is seamless.
  • No visible traces of how the armor was assembled are shown.

Stormtrooper_Concept_Shins

Lower Leg Armor

  • Armor is painted Glossy White.
  • Assembled with seamless joints on on the front.
  • With shin connector on the inside.
  • Back of legs open, clam shell style, with the outside overlapping the inside.
  • The surface of the inner legs have a creased arc detail which travels from front of shin to the back of calf.
  • The creased arc detail, on the surface of the outer leg, only travels from the front to mid way back.

Boots

  • Constructed of White, smooth leather, matching the color of the armor.
  • Option One: Ankle high boots, with Stormtrooper style soles and a low heel .
  • Option Two: Low profile shoes with flat soles.

Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.

Holster

  • Holster is the appropriate color and style for the specific blaster.
  • Holster is not present if no blaster is carried.

Stormtrooper Laser Sword

  • The TK Laser Sword is shown in the Ralph Mcquarrie concept illustrations, for the movie script entitled: “Star Wars” or originally known as ”The Star Wars”.
  • Most often constructed from a modified vintage flashlight.
  • A specific configuration of details on the sword hilt is not required, but does accurately represent what is shown in the Ralph Mcquarrie concept illustrations.
  • The laser sword has a white or clear blade.

Blade illuminates.

E-11 Blaster

  • Based on a real or replica Sterling sub-machine gun, scratch-built, or a modified commercial toy Stormtrooper blaster.

OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
Folding stock.
Stock does not need to function.
A real or replica ammo counter - based off of a Hengstler counter - should be present.
D-ring mounted on the rear.
Correct style scope.
Two power cylinders on the magazine.
Scratch-built, resin cast, Hyperfirm rubber cast blasters should have a total of 6 t-racks on blaster (leaving the lowest row on the Hengstler side un-covered).
If using the Hasbro E11 toy blaster, it is modified to have the correct number of T-tracks (6 total), with a lower row of open vent holes on the magazine housing side.
This is accomplished by covering the pre-existing rows of holes with T-tracks, then grinding off the lower integrated T-track on the magazine housing side, and drilling a new row of holes in its place.
3D printed blasters can not contain visible print lines and must be sanded smooth for a more realistic appearance.


Generic-dlt19

DLT-19 Heavy Blaster Rifle

  • Based on a real or replica MG-34 machine gun.

OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
A DLT-19 is an MG-34 with T-tracks on the barrel, ejection port cover added, and a small disk on left side.

Grappling Hook/Comlink

  • The grappling hook and comlink are substituted as a set, in place of the thermal detonator, not worn in addition to it.

SE-14R Blaster

  • The SE-14R blaster was only seen in promotional photos for the film.
  • It has a correct scope if carried in lieu of the E-11 for informal events.
