This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.

This is a visual guide used for 501st costume approval, not a how-to for construction. Construction details are found at the costume's Detachment website. Measurements provided here are generalized, and not criteria for approval. All 501st costumes are proportionate to the wearer in terms of size, fit, and scale. During evaluation, both text and images (CRL and Reference) must be considered. When in doubt about a feature of a submitted costume, GMLs should post questions in the Legion forum's DL/GML peer review section.

Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below. For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met. This Detachment defines additional, optional costuming details listed in blue and red. Please visit the Detachment website for more details on these options.

ID_FO_FLATFOLD_JACKET

Tunic, First Order, Black

  • Fabric is a medium weight, Black material matching the pants.
  • Tunic is fitted to the wearer.
  • Double-breasted with a left over right closure.
  • Closes using flat hooks or hook and eye closures.
  • Sleeves are long and end at the wrist.
  • First Order rank insignia are fully attached on the left arm.
  • The collar is snug with an angled V neck design.
  • Two vertical seams on the front and back sits between the collar and the edge of the shoulder.

OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):

  • There is a seam running the entire circumference of the tunic, dividing it along a line hidden by the uniform belt.
  • There is a seam the entire circumference of the sleeves on the lower forearm, which is hidden on the left side by the rank insignia.

ID_FO_FLATFOLD_PANTS

Jodhpur Trousers, First Order, Black

  • Fabric is a medium weight Black suiting material matching the tunic.
  • Flared riding breeches have semi-stiff flares in the hip/thigh area, below the tunic and above the knee.
  • Flare is triangular in shape and fits snugly at the knee.
  • Pockets and waist belts are acceptable, although are not visible with the tunic on.

ID_Hux_boots

Officer Boots, First Order

  • Knee-high, black, lace-less, smooth non-textured, leather or leather-like material, with moderate to high-gloss shine.
  • There are no stretch panels, buckles, snap tabs, or decoration.
  • Boot seams closely match screen-used boots.
  • Soles are flat.
  • If zippers are present, they are on the inner part of the boot shaft only.

OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):

  • Boots have a zipper on the inner shaft.
  • Seams and design match screen-used boots.

ID_Hux_gloves

Gloves, First Order, Black

  • Gloves are constructed of a non-textured, black leather or leather-like material.
  • Enclosed fingers.
  • Gloves are gauntlet length, fitted, and worn underneath the sleeves.
  • No buckles, straps, etc.
  • Gloves may have seams similar to Original Trilogy officer gloves for basic approval.

ID_Hux_belt

Belt, First Order

  • The belt is constructed from a black, non-textured leather or a leather-like material.
  • Approximately 2" (50.8 mm) in width, up to 3" (76.2 mm) is acceptable.
  • Belt fits snug over the natural waist of the wearer.
  • There are no loops on the belt.
  • Sizing holes on either side of the buckle are acceptable for basic approval.
  • The buckle is constructed from a horizontally brushed metal, or metal-looking material.
  • Buckle is free of decoration, greeblies or insignia.
  • Buckle is rectangular, with sharp-angled edges, approximately 5¼" (13.3 cm) long & 2½" high (6.35 cm).

OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):

  • Belt is made of leather.
  • There are no sizing holes
  • Buckle has a slight horizontal curve.

ID_FO_FLATFOLD_CUFF

Rank Insignia, First Order

  • Worn on the left side of arm, above the wrist and below the elbow.
  • Rank A:
    • Rank consists of two black bands sewn down to the sleeve.
    • Four white stripes one at the top and bottom of both bands.
  • Rank B:
    • Rank consists of two black bands with four white bands with red outlining sewn down to the sleeve.

OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):

  • Rank bands consist of two separate black bands with the piping on the top and bottom edge of each.

Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.

Hh4

First Order Hat, black

  • The hat's brim is a black leather, or leather-like material protruding from the front bottom of the dome. It is curved in shape and does not obscure the wearer's eyes.
  • The dome fits snugly on the head and cocks slightly back like a baseball cap.
  • It is fitted to the head and does not cover the ears.
  • There is a tall flap around the back half of the hat, snugly fitting around the dome.
  • This piece is not higher than the dome of the hat, and does not overly flex outward.
  • It is effectively vertical in respect to the rest of the hat, and viewed from the side, it's edges are tilted slightly back at an angle.
  • The First Order emblem is centered in the front of the hat's dome. For TFA it is black and white. For TLJ it is black and white with a red inner rim.
  • The base hat is made from the same material as the suit.

OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):

  • First Order insignia is a metal pin, centered in the front of the hat's dome.
  • The dome has a subtle curved seam separating the front panel from rest of the hat, with a similar seam on the back part of the dome, with one vertical seam down the dome's back.

OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):

  • Hat has top stitching at the base of the dome above the brim.

ID_FO_FLATFOLD_CAPE

Cape, First Order

  • The cape is black and made from a black medium weight material.
  • Ends at the mid-calf.
  • Wide and flowing around the body and open in the front.
  • A triangle collar flap is located on both breasts and ends at the belt.
  • At the shoulders there is a shoulder cap that is rectangular, it extends the length of the shoulder and is only located at the top.

IOC_FO_Blasters

Officer's Blaster and Holster, First Order

  • Based on a replica Glock 17 repeating pistol, scratch-built with added greeblies, or a modified commercial replica is acceptable.
  • Details to be painted black and silver per reference photos.
  • Black leather or leather like holster affixed to the wearers right hip.
