After the Battle of Lothal and his disappearance, Grand Admiral thrawn returns as the Imperial Remnant's most brilliant strategist. The chiss is a calculating and disciplined commander whose patience, intellect and mastery of warfare pose a renewed threat to the galaxy.
This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.
This is a visual guide used for 501st costume approval, not a how-to for construction. Construction details are found at the costume's Detachment website. Measurements provided here are generalized, and not criteria for approval. All 501st costumes are proportionate to the wearer in terms of size, fit, and scale. During evaluation, both text and images (CRL and Reference) must be considered. When in doubt about a feature of a submitted costume, GMLs should post questions in the Legion forum's DL/GML peer review section.
Required Costume Components
The following costume components are present and appear as described below. For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met. This Detachment defines additional, optional costuming details listed in blue and red. Please visit the Detachment website for more details on these options.
Hair and Skin Appearance
- All exposed skin is colored a light to medium blue.
- Hair is close-cropped and black.
- The eyebrows are the same shade as the hair.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- Hair looks natural, and is styled in a way as to not give the apperance of a wig.
- Fingernails are painted in blue to match the skin.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
- A V-shaped indentation is visible on the forehead, either through the use of makeup contouring of prosthetics.
- An arching widow's peak is combed back at the sides and top. Hair length in back does not extend past the base of the collar.
Tunic, White
- Fabric is a medium to heavy weight twill weave material exactly matching the trousers. Cavalry Twill or a Gabardine style weave is most accurate.
- Tunic is double-breasted with a left over right closure on the tapered yoke.
- Yoke comes up across the shoulder to the top shoulder seam.
- The standing collar has square corners and is between 1.25 to 2 inches (31.8 to 50.8mm) tall dependant on wearer's neck size.
- The collar closes snugly: The wearer's neck must not be visible between the closed collar edges.
- Collar edges are completely closed with two (2) eye hooks or new flush hooks.
- Modestly panel is optional.
- Collar's edge's show wear.
- There are code cylinder pockets on both outside panels of the jacket, from about half way between the top and bottom on the arm hole.
- Tunic has long sleeves which are without decoration, cuffs or buttons
- Sleeves contain 2 primary seams. one along the bottom, and one along the back.
- At the bicep on the sleeves there are two decorative seams running parallel to each other on both sides, about 50 to 70mm apart.
- The seams have three bends: They start by angle down slightly from the sleeve seam, bend up slightly, about 25% of the distance around, then bend up again at the center towards the outside of the arm, symmetrically, and again angle up symmetrically before meeting the arm sleeve in the back.
- The bicep seams are constructed with no top-stitching (stitches visible on the exterior surface of fabric)
- Tunic is constructed with no top-stitching (stitches visible on the exterior surface of fabric), excepting specific patterns for fabric repair spots.
- Fasteners on the uniform should not be visible.
- Uniform is to be pressed and free of a wrinkled appearance.
- OPTIONAL: Up to six (6) hooks may be added through the sides of the tunic to hold belt in place. Hooks must be black.
- Hooks are placed to match references
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- There is a dart present on the top center of the yoke.
- The dart may vary in size due to the size of the wearer's individual tunic and how it fits, but should be between 2 to 4 inches (50.5 to 101mm) in length. Typically, but not always, the dart ends at or below the top of the code cylinder pocket.
- There is a seam running the entire circumference of the tunic, dividing it along a seam line which should be hidden by the uniform belt.
- The front placket of the tunic may omit this seam only if the uniform belt is worn in a manner which conceals the omission.
- The back of the tunic has princess seams that run vertically and turn outward to intersect the arm-hole seam at the vertical center.
- The bicep lower seam intersects the code cylinder pocket opening.
- The whole tunic is slightly worn.
- Messy stitched repairs and worn spots align with references.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
- Tunic is secured on the right side by snaps, hook, & bar, buttons, or unseen magnets; not hook and loop fastener.
- There is a sewn in lining.
- The princess seam on the back intersects the lower bicep seam
Collar Rank Insignia
- There is rank Insignia on both sides of the collar.
- One bar followed by one outward facing triangle.
- Rank is metallic Silver.
- Insignia is fastened flush to the collar in a manner which does not permit rotation out of alignment.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- Rank Insignia must have depth or 3-dimensional shape instead of a 2-dimensional shape.
- Rank Insignia is made of metal or finished to convincingly resemble metal.
Epaulets
- Dark yellow, yellow-gold or gold colored strips, firmly attached on the edge of each shoulder.
- The epaulets are matte or metallic in finish and made with a semi-rigid to rigid material.
- Positioned across the collar bone where the shoulder begins, between the shoulder seam and yoke seam.
- The epaulets do not overlap the seams but sit between.
- Thickness is approximately 1/8 inch (or 3 to 4mm).
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- The lower limit of the epaulets, in positioning, should run parallel to the lowest point of the center of the collar.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
- Epaulets fit perfectly flush to the tunic.
- Have a metallic sheen.
Grand Admiral Rank Bar
- Worn on the left side of the tunic over the heart, aligned with the code cylinder pocket.
- Rank consists of colored plastic tiles mounted on metal or metal looking bar.
- Each bar is 1" (25.4mm) height, length is determined by the number of tiles.
- Rank tile dimensions are 1/2" (12.7mm)width x 3/4" (19mm) height and about 1/8" (3.2mm).
- Tiles are mounted with 1/4" (6.4mm) spaces between them.
- Please note that final dimensions of the bar may be proportional to the wearer.
- Rank bar exactly matches the color pattern used in the references.
- Three blue and three amber tiles on the top bar.
- Three blue, followed by three red, on the bottom bar.
- Rank bar corners are a hard 90 degree angle, or very slightly rounded.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- Rank consists of two separate strips, one atop the other, meeting together flush.
- Rank consists of colored plastic push buttons (with white to off white insert) mounted on a metal bar.
Code Cylinders
- Four Code Cylinders are worn.
- Dosimeter style with correct brass clip (no silver) and blue top.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- Only real or replica dosimeters are used.
Belt
- The belt is constructed from a non-textured leather or a leather-like material.
- Approximately 2" (50.8mm) in width, up to 2.5” (63.5mm) is acceptable.
- There are no loops on the belt.
- A single large silver snap or rivet is visible approximately 1" (25.4mm) from the buckle.
- The belt shell be worn with the snap to the left of the buckle (wearer’s perspective).
- The buckle is constructed from a horizontally brushed metal, or metal looking material.
- The buckle size is approximately 2 ⅛" (66.7mm) high and 4 ⅛" (104.5mm) wide with 0.5" (12.7mm) radius rounded corners.
- Buckle is adorned with an un-notched Imperial Code Disk at the center.
- Please refer to the Imperial Buckle reference page for information on accurate and inaccurate style buckles.
- 2-3 extra belt holes may be visible to the right of the buckle.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- Belt is made of leather.
- Belt has a groove at the top and bottom edge along the length of the belt.
- Buckle has a slight horizontal curve.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
- 2-3 extra belt holes are visible to the right of the buckle.
Jodhpur Trousers, White
- Fabric is a medium to heavy weight twill weave material exactly matching the tunic.
- Cavalry Twill or a Gabardine style weave is most accurate.
- Flared riding breeches are canon, with semi-stiff flares to the hip/ thigh area.
- Breeches are neatly pressed or ironed without creases.
- Pockets are acceptable, although not visible with the tunic on.
- Trousers are worn neatly tucked into tall boots with no blousing.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- Double seams can be seen on the outer edge of the trousers, along the thigh and down below the boot level.
- Triple horizontal seams can be seen along back of the knee, joining the side seams.
- Seams are spaced approx 10mm apart.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
- The outer double jodhpurs seams curve slightly near the knee area, then running vertical below the knee to the bottom of the legs.
Officer Boots
- Knee-high, black, riding style, lace-less, smooth non-textured, leather or leather-like material.
- There are no buckles, snap tabs or decoration.
- There are no center seams on the front shaft of the boot.
- Boots have conservative heels.
- A single stretch panel or zipper may be present, they are to be hidden on the inner part of the boot shaft. Not visible from the front, side or back.
- The top of the boots may be flat or Spanish Style, but not Cowboy or Super Hero (pointed at the front) style.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- Boots are made of leather and may have hidden zippers.
- Boots do not have stretch panels.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
- Exact replicas of English riding (dress) boots, German marching boots, or Equestrian boots.
- Top of the boots are flat and horizontal, not angled or Spanish style.
Optional Accessories
Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.
Eye Color
- Red theatrical contact lenses.
- While encouraged to complete the look of this character, the contact lens requirement will be waived for 501st acceptance, if the applicant cannot wear contact lenses for health related reasons.
- All persons wishing to utilize contact lenses are encouraged to first see their optometrist for a fitting.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
- The entire eye is red.
Blaster Holster
- Made of black leather or leather-like material.
- Outer circumference of the holster is curved around the basic shape of the blaster, tapering towards the end of the barrel.
- Outer panel is folder over and stitched closed along the underside of the blaster
- Holster has one belt loop that is integrated into the holster body.
- Holster is worn on the right side.
- A safety strap which secures the blaster in the holster is present, made from the same material as the holster.
- Holster is not present if no blaster is carried with the costume.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- Holster is made of leather.
- The safety strap has two horizontal grooves past the snap.
- The safety strap has a black snap at the end.
Blaster
- Grip and back of blaster is based on a modified Heathway Plainsman air pistol or replica thereof.
- Slide is modified with stepped slide above the original.
- Blaster shall remain holstered until confirmation of forward parts becomes known.
