This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.
This is a visual guide used for 501st costume approval, not a how-to for construction. Construction details are found at the costume's Detachment website. Measurements provided here are are generalized, and not criteria for approval. All 501st costumes are proportionate to the wearer in terms of size, fit, and scale. During evaluation, both text and images (CRL and Reference) must be considered. When in doubt about a feature of a submitted costume, GMLs should post questions in the Legion forum's DL/GML peer review section.
Required Costume Components
The following costume components are present and appear as described below. For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met. This Detachment defines additional, optional costuming details listed in blue and red. Please visit the Detachment website for more details on these options.

- Through the use of prosthetic appliances, the following key facial features resemble that of Darth Sidious/ The Emperor:
- Prosthetic appliances are made from silicone, foam latex, or gelatin on the eyebrows/ forehead, cheeks, and chin.
- The color of the prosthetic appliances matches semi-pale flesh tone.
- The prosthetic appliance are well blended into the skin reducing the noticeable separation between the skin around the eyes and mouth and the appliance.
- If desired, a high quality bald cap can be used.
- "Halloween style" masks are not acceptable.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- The area around the eyes is darker than the rest of the face with pink/red blended consistently.

- Hands are made up with high quality cosmetics and latex old age stipple or prosthetic appliances simulating old age.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- The nails are colored with a yellow base and brown and black at the edges and elongated.

- Floor length inner robe made with natural fabric that is the same color as the outer robe.
- The sleeves are long and end at the wrist.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- Made of silk dupion.
- No visible top stitching.

- Outer robe is made from a textured wool or wool-like material in crimson.
- The sleeve has a single tuck located before the elbow.
- Reaches the floor at the front and has a train at the back, and the skirting is full and wide.
- There is a center front split, starting under the tabard.
- The wrist is finished with piping made with the same red leather/pleather material of the other details of the costume.
- The sleeves are small at the wrist and billow, they end at the costumers knee.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- No visible top stitching anywhere.
- A texture like piqué or basket weave, only visible when close to the garment, and that disappears when seen from distance. The fabric has the hand and weight of coat making material, flat lined with a material that gives it proper weight and hang.
- The outer tunic is lined in the same material of the inner tunic, and that is visible at the wrists and at the front split.
- The sleeves are built with two panels each. One seam runs at the edge of the round part, the other on the front, not at the side and under the arm. The lower part has a round shape that reaches the knee of the wearer. The sleeve has a deep fold at the elbow, with the front sleeve seam at the center. The fold can be kept in place sewing it to the inner sleeve, or adding a tape, or sewing it to the lining, and this solution must not be visible from the outside. The sleeve opens at the wrist enough to allow the inner sleeve to slide through smoothly.

- Hood, capelet and tabard are made from velvet, in a deeper red than the outer and inner tunic.
- The capelet covers the shoulders, and is shorter at center front and ends at the middle of the back.
- The capelet has five thin stripes at each side. Each stripe’s edges are folded under the stripe itself.
- Stiff and tall collar, the collar is wider at the base and is smaller at the top and appears as a funnel shape.
- Capelet and collar are padded.
- The capelet is lined in the same velvet.
- The hood is attached under the collar, at the sides. It is wide enough to cover the shoulders.
- There is a large tabard in the front it ends just below the knee and ends in an upside-down pointed arch shape. It is made in the same velvet, it is reinforced to keep its place and shape even in movement, and is piped all around with the same pleather/leather used for the other details.
- It has five Naboo-style symbols embroidered at the center in a matching colour thread to the outer tunic, or slightly lighter than the velvet red, with red pleather/leather sections. The top one is smaller, and they increase in size.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- Made from silk velvet.
- Hood creates a triangular shape with the capelet when seen from the front. The hood has a sort of point at the back, that reaches 3 inches or 7,5cm above the edge of the capelet. It has no visible seam.
- Made from silk-rayon velvet
- No visible topstitching anywhere.
- It has a round shape with no angles or points, and it has a concave shape at the front, and convex at the sides and back.
- There is almost no space between the bottom of the lowest symbol and the edge of the tabard

- Flat black in color, no decoration or laces, rounded toe, and are made of leather or leather-like material or rough-out/suede.
- Jack boots or an alternative suede slip-on style shoe is acceptable. If the latter, no skin or brightly colored socks are visible on costumer when walking.
Optional Accessories
Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.

- The contact lenses are described as a fiery yellow transitioning into a brilliant red.
- This style of contact lens may be worn, if desired.
- While encouraged to complete the look of this character, the contact lens requirement will be waived for 501st acceptance, if the applicant cannot wear contact lenses for health related reasons.
- All persons utilizing contact lenses are encouraged to first see their optometrist for a fitting.

- The lightsaber is not a required part of the costume since FX Sidious/Emperor lightsabers are almost non existence, and it was worn up his sleeve.
- If used, it is only be submitted with the ROTS version, and be a Master Replica, scratch built, or another high-end prop replica of what is seen in the film.

Lightsaber reflects 1:1 scale in size and appears to be of metal or chrome/gold/silver stock, and is worn up the wearer’s right sleeve.
