Having reclaimed his identity as the Master of the Knights of Ren, the Supreme Leader of the First Order scours the galaxy to snuff out anything that may threaten his iron-fisted rule.

This is a visual guide used for 501st costume approval, not a how-to for construction. Construction details are found at the costume's Detachment website. Measurements provided here are are generalized, and not criteria for approval. All 501st costumes are proportionate to the wearer in terms of size, fit, and scale. During evaluation, both text and images (CRL and Reference) must be considered. When in doubt about a feature of a submitted costume, GMLs should post questions in the Legion forum's DL/GML peer review section.

Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below. For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met. This Detachment defines additional, optional costuming details listed in blue and red. Please visit the Detachment website for more details on these options.

• The helmet is adorned with a specific red cracked pattern that should match film references.
• The cracks are backlit to provide a red glow. Painted / unlit cracks are not acceptable.
• The red glow should utilize diffusion to provide a consistent glow with no obvious LED hotspots.
• The helmet is painted matte black.
• Helmet has textured finish consistent with reference material.
• The helmet is asymmetrical and has 5 chrome/silver ridges contouring the eye opening that transition into various ridges on the cheek areas.
• The wearer’s eyes and face are blacked out with sheer fabric.
• The helmet is proportional to the wearer.
• A balaclava must be worn while wearing the helmet.
• The holes between the ridges in the cheeks are lined with a black material attached to the inside of the helmet.

• The complete seal is comprised of two small seals which overlap each other.
• Edges of leather and fabric must be finished (folded and glued).
• Worn over the tunic, and extends to the top of the wearer's neck, just above the chin line.
• Composed of 11 horizontally stacked or stepped strips of leather-like material.
• A layer of large weave, black canvas fabric adorns the base of the collar.
• The top seal (comprised of 7–8 strips) has an overlapping closure with the “tail” of the closure terminating on the wearer’s left side.
• The bottom seal (comprised of 4–5 strips) is worn overlapped at the base of the top seal.
• The tail of the top seal closure must appear to tuck between the layers.

• The cape is made from leather or high quality like material (pleather or faux suede)
• A hood is attached to the back of the cape along the line where the panels meet the trim.
• The hood is made out of the same material as the rest of the cape, is comprised of 22 panels and is constructed using the same method as the cape.
• The interior of the hood is lined with a satin material.
• The hood is worn down.

• The cape has a cracked/speckled finish and a gloss sheen.
• The cape is made of patchworked cuts.
• All pieces are tilted at a horizontal angle. The angled cuts are in the same direction around the cape.

• Two straps attached at the inside secure the cape.
• Panels sewn with top stitched finished seams.
• Cape has an edge of trim around the collar and front edge; it begins at the bottom hem and transitions around the collar.
• The cape is ankle length.

• The tunic is made of black lightweight fabric with minimal sheen.
• The tunic is quilted with thick batting.
• The tunic is patterned with approximately 0.8 Inch (20mm) squares with pintucked borders.
• Tunic is padded.
• Black canvas shoulder cap.
• Military collar is closed.
• Sewn with bronze/dark gold thread
• Hidden zipper in the center of the tunic, ends under the belt.
• The tunic is form fitting and tailored to the costumer.
• Tunic skirting is mid-thigh length.
• The skirting is belled.
• The center skirting at the back creates a chevron under the belt.
• The pintucks are pressed flat to the costumers left.

• Sleeves are made from matte black canvas.
• The sleeves are attached to a black shirt.
• The sleeved shirt is worn beneath the tunic.
• Constructed with 32 to 42 pleats.
• The sleeves are form fitting, extend to the wrist.
• A zipper ending at the base of the thumb runs down the inside seam of the sleeve.

• Form fitting black leather (or leather-like material) with no visible colors, logos or other markings.
• The gloves do not have straps or buckles.
• The tops have minimum of two lines wrapping the top of the knuckles and lines that are vertical with two small piping lines, they intersect at the joints of the fingers with another piece of leather that is as wide as the knuckle leather. On the index finger there is an indented design.
• Gloves are made of leather or leather-like material.

• Made of black rigid thick leather or leather-like material, black with straps at the top and bottom.
• Straps are distressed, and made from the same material as the belt.
• Worn on top of the Tunic.
• Seamless around the wearer’s body — the closure is behind the buckle.
• The buckle is semi-gloss black, rectangular, centered on the front of the wearer, and is the same height as the belt.
• The details of the buckle are as pictured.
• The saber clip is semi-gloss black, and mounted on the belt 2–3 inch (51–76mm) behind the wearer’s right hip.
• The details of the saber clip are pictured.

• Trousers are made from loose fitted black coated denim.
• Resin or wax coated with a uniform finish & sheen
• Darts present above and below the knee.
• There is a lapped seam at the back of the knee, featuring a double row stitch.

• Made of leather, or leather-like material, black and have a medium gloss shine with no visible laces.
• Have a rounded toe and a smooth textured appearance.
• There are 4 strips of vertical panels from the base of the ankle to the top of the boot.
• Two straps at the top and two at the bottom around the ankle.
• Each strap is fastened by a rectangular buckle on the outer side of the boot.
• Buckles on the boots are black.
• The four horizontal straps excess (tongues) should be cut at an approximately 45 degree angle (top to bottom) and not be longer than 1 inch (25mm).
• There are 4 ribs (including 5 piped edges) from the sides of the boot starting at the ankle.
• The heel of the boot has four pleats wrapping around the back of the boot.
• The sole is flat.
• Three vertical ribs (including four piped edges) of equal width.

• A high-end prop replica of either the stunt or hero saber.
• The saber must be painted to closely match the visual reference of the screen used saber.
• The blades are not a required component.
