The Imperial Army Sapper is an expert in a wide array of explosives and demolitions. While capable as infantry, they are best suited for the breaching of enemy strongholds utilizing their entrenching shovel and armament of charges.
This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.
This is a visual guide used for 501st costume approval, not a how-to for construction. Construction details are found at the costume's Detachment website. Measurements provided here are are generalized, and not criteria for approval. All 501st costumes are proportionate to the wearer in terms of size, fit, and scale. During evaluation, both text and images (CRL and Reference) must be considered. When in doubt about a feature of a submitted costume, GMLs should post questions in the Legion forum's DL/GML peer review section.
Required Costume Components
The following costume components are present and appear as described below. For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met. This Detachment defines additional, optional costuming details listed in blue and red. Please visit the Detachment website for more details on these options.
Special Notes: Soft parts may be slightly weathered. Blasters are not required for legion membership per our weapons policy.

- Open face helmet whose base consists of a dome with rim and helmet skirt.
- The helmet skirt is to be smooth all around with no indentations on the rear.
- The helmet is black in color with a flat or satin finish.
- A black trim covers the edge of the helmet skirt and forehead of the dome.
- Hearing protection is mounted to the inside of the helmet per source art.
- Black chin strap and black plastic chin cup are present.
- Two or four screw caps are mounted to either side of the helmet.

- Goggles should have square like black frame with angled sides, and dark lenses. A black elastic strap holds the goggles to the helmet.

Black Imperial Army Jumpsuit
- One piece black coverall with a hidden front zipper and mandarin collar.
- Each shoulder has an Imperial Army patch that sits 3" to 4" (75-100mm) inches below the shoulder seam.
- 2 large chest pockets.
- 2 large cargo pockets sit on the outside of the legs from around mid-thigh and not extending past bottom of the knee, with a rectangular flap covering the top of the pocket.
- Rank bars of any kind are not permitted.
- No pockets on sleeves or the front of the coverall leg.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- Mandarin collar is closed by a chevron shaped strap across the neck.
- A single black snap is present near the chevron point in the collar. Snap does not need to be functional.
- An olive or olive drab tab style patch is permitted above the Imperial Army patch. Aurebesh text is permitted. See Gallery View for details.
- Cargo pockets billow out to appear full.

- A shield shaped patch.
- The patch has an Imperial cog symbol approximately 2.75" to 3" (69-76mm) in diameter.
- The background of the patch has a more narrow shield shaped design on top of a box colored a darker shade of green.

- Pack has 2" (50mm) black shoulder straps with rectangular black pads made from nylon, heavy cotton, or leather.
- Four black rectangular boxes matching the size and shape of the source art are mounted to match the angle seen in the source art.
- No waist belt is present.
- All demolition charges and mounting straps are painted black. No color "warning" stripes or LEDs are permitted on the charges or pack.
- Demolition charge on top of the backpack is approximately 3.5" to 3.75" (90-95mm) in diameter and longer than the pack is wide.
- The beveled ends feature a depressed area with a slightly raised lip and have 1" (25mm) wide "coin slots."
- Two matching black mounting straps are present on this charge. The straps may be metal, plastic or webbing.
- Demolition charge mounted to the bottom of the pack is approximately 3" to 3.5" (75-90mm) in diameter and is almost as wide as the pack boxes.
- Features rounded end caps with a flat depression at the ends of the caps.
- An entrenching shovel matching the shape of source art shall be mounted to the back of the pack.
- The right side of the pack shall have a long rectangular black fabric pouch with closure flap mounted as seen in source art.
- The pouch is roughly as long as the pack boxes are tall.
- A single black snap closes the flap.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- Backpack may have a hidden frame and appears to be an angled plate snug to the wearers back.
- Backpack shoulder straps should appear to be 2-part adjustable consisting of webbing with a chevron shaped top strap.
- A 1" (25mm) adjustment strap passes over the shoulder, then goes into a hole in the strap, passes underneath the 2" (50mm) strap and then exits the strap just above the chevron point.
- The 1" (25mm) strap shall have a nylon "keeper" mounted below the point of the chevron.
- The adjustments need not be functional but should match source art.

- Black, leather or leather-like, enclosed fingered, and non-textured.
- Does not extend past the wrist.
- No buckles or straps are permitted
- May have three stitched lines or square padding on the back of the hand.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- Square padding is present on back of hand.

- Black colored, double strap “H” harness which travels from the lower back, and up over the shoulders.
- Harness is made of 2" (50mm) black nylon webbing.
- The harness system attaches to the belt.
- Visible snap-hook style fasteners that attach to belt eyelets are acceptable.
- Tri-glides may be present on front or back of suspenders.
- Back of suspenders may be permanently fastened to belt, but not required.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- Harness fasteners are not seen, and may be hidden behind the belt.
- Tri-glides are present on the front suspenders for harness adjustment. Tri-glides are level with each other.

- Black rectangular nylon chest pouches are worn between the shoulder straps.
- Pouches are mounted to the shoulder straps using 1" to 1.5" (25-38mm) black nylon webbing.
- Either a large or a medium size pouch may be used are seen in the source art.
- With minor modification black MOLLE pouches, first aid pouches, SAW gunner pouches, gas mask pouches etc. are permitted for the chest pouch.
- No visible buckles or pull cords are permitted.
- Pouches will be stuffed to appear full.
- Pouches with zippers shall have the zippers covered or concealed either with a matching fabric or tight weave webbing.
- Zipper pulls are either removed or hidden from view.

- Belt is a 2" to 2.25" (50-57mm) wide nylon military style quick release web belt.
- Belt is black in color.
- Belt has grommets that run along both the top and bottom of its length.

- Belt pouches are black and should be made of nylon or similar material.
- Two black belt pouches on either side of the belt buckle near where the harness meets the belt. MA47 double handcuff MOLLE PALS or other black nylon utility pouches are acceptable.
- MP40 pouches are seen worn on both hips. Black canvas, leather, or faux leather is acceptable.
- A large, black, MOLLE gas mask style pouch may be mounted to the back of the belt.
- Two MOLLE Strobe pouches flank the large rear pouch on the back of the belt, one on each side.
- A large side pouch, gas mask pouch, dump pouch etc may be mounted to the left side of the belt or worn on the hip.
- All pouches should be stuffed to appear full.
- Pouches with zippers shall have the zippers covered or concealed either with a matching fabric or tight weave webbing.
- Zipper pulls are either removed or hidden from view.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- Small pouches will make use of a visible single snap closure or appear to have such.
- Large pouches will make use of a visible double snap closure or appear to have such.

- Black in color, made of canvas, leather or leather-like German MP-40 style ammo pouches.
- Must be worn on each hip.

- "Commuter" style boot 8" to 9" (20-23cm) in height.
- Calf high boots such as "jackboots" or "kersey" style are not acceptable.
- Black leather or leather like material.
- Free of laces, decorative stitching, buckles or any other embellishments.
- Normal leather grain/texture/lines are acceptable.
- Tread on the soles and heels is acceptable
- Zippers on the inside of the boot are acceptable, so long as they are concealed. If not covered by leather or vinyl, zippers are painted black.
OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
- Pants legs shall be tucked into boots and fluffed to give appearance of original source art.
- Weathering of boots is encouraged.
Optional Accessories
Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.
