This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.
This is a visual guide used for 501st costume approval, not a how-to for construction. Construction details are found at the costume's Detachment website. Measurements provided here are generalized, and not criteria for approval. All 501st costumes are proportionate to the wearer in terms of size, fit, and scale. During evaluation, both text and images (CRL and Reference) must be considered. When in doubt about a feature of a submitted costume, GMLs should post questions in the Legion forum's DL/GML peer review section.

- The left side of the pack has a knife in a sheath of leather or leather like material.
- The sheath is form fitting at the top around the handle base and tapers inward to a blunt pointed end.
- The sheath has two attached points to the pack with straps and silver details. There is an additional vertical strap with a silver detail separating them, see reference.
- The shoulder straps are made of alternating layers starting with thick black material and then brown leather or leather like material.
- Each layer gets gradually thinner as it stacks outward. There are four layers in all. The width of the straps ranges from 2 ¾" (widest innermost layer) to 1 ¾" (thinnest outermost layer).
- The inner most layer combination starts and stops approximately ½ way up the full height of the shoulder strap loop starting from the front going over the should and stopping at the mid back.
- The next layer of shoulder straps follows the same curvature of the under straps over the shoulder and then curves under the arm area, lying flat against the body and meets under the arm.
- The layered shoulder straps cross over the shoulder midway from the base of the neck to the shoulder point.
- There are silver colored rectangular buckles between the outermost layers.
- Each buckle is positioned just before the end of the shorter inner straps at the front and back.
- The buckle body lies behind the outermost layer and a diagonal prong lies on top of it.
- The four corners of the rectangular buckles are cut at a 45-degree angle ¼" from the corners.
- There is a raised border edge ¼" wide.
- There is a ¼" gap that cuts through the border at the center height of the buckle.
- The upper inner border edge and outer lower part of the border rise up at the end and curve under to create an angled tunnel for a black prong to fit through which connects both tunnels over the outer leather strap.
- There are raised details on the raised edge close to the corners.
- The buckles are weathered.
- There is a ¼" wide black fabric strap that loops around the outer shoulder straps approximately 1 ¼" below each buckle. There are two sets of stitching on each strap going vertically on either side of the strap.

- At the base of the handle above the hilt there is another small silver dot also horizontally centered, followed by two raised silver lines that follow the shape of the hilt and go all the way around the handle.
- The knife hilt is thicker than the handle on all sides ranging from ¼ - ½ inch deep.
- The outer sides are vertical.
