Darth Nihilus literally fed off the living force. No longer a being of flesh and blood, The Lord of Hunger had found a way to bind his dark consciousness to his armour. As a Force Wraith, the only physical signs of his age where seen in the tattered appearance of his robes.
This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.
This is a visual guide used for 501st costume approval, not a how-to for construction. Construction details are found at the costume's Detachment website. Measurements provided here are generalized, and not criteria for approval. All 501st costumes are proportionate to the wearer in terms of size, fit, and scale. During evaluation, both text and images (CRL and Reference) must be considered. When in doubt about a feature of a submitted costume, GMLs should post questions in the Legion forum's DL/GML peer review section.
Required Costume Components
The following costume components are present and appear as described below. For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.

- Made of a natural weave black material.
- The hood is attached to the top edge of the mask above the silver decoration on the forehead, this blocks the top of the head from view.
- The silver decoration slightly overlaps the hood.
- The hood is squared-off at the top and comes to a "V" shape at the chest where it is gathered with the cape.
- The edges are tied together at the upper sternum with a single knot. The ends of the knot are not visible.
- The bottom edge of the cape is heavily tattered.
- The cape falls no less than approximately two in. (5 cm) from the ground.
- The cape is kept behind the shoulders at all times.

- The stylized, skull-like mask is white in color.
- The mask begins at the top of the forehead and extends to the wearer's lips.
- The mask has two red stripes; Located over the eye holes, with each stripe extending upwards with a slight taper.
- The silver forehead design consists of a two-layer bar that starts at the bridge of the nose. The bar connects to an oval design in the center of the forehead, and then narrows again until it reaches the edge of cowl/hood. At that point it expands outward into a second oval with two smaller ovals going out to either side, the shapes at the sides have smaller detailing points.
- (Note: KOTOR II mask is NOT acceptable with this version.)

- The face is blacked out by a sculpted black mask with visible mouth details.

- A form-fitting black balaclava is worn to hide the costumer's face and neck.

- Made of a natural weave black material.
- The sleeves are made from a smoother textured fabric than the rest of the costume.
- The sleeves are quilted in appearance, and the vertical ribs are top stitched approximately 1 inch (2.5cm) side by side.
- (Note: The sleeves may be attached to a separate black undershirt, or deep set inside the inner tunic. This effect gives the illusion that there is another shirt worn under the inner tunic.)

- The black leather or leather like gloves are mid forearm length.
- The gloves are form fitting.
- The gloves are free of straps, buckles, snaps, stitching, decorations or any embellishments.

- The tunic is made from the same material as the hood and cape.
- The left side of the tunic crosses over the right side in the front.
- (Note: For dressing convenience, the outer skirt may be attached to the inner tunic at the waist. The seam will be hidden by the outer tunic.
- Note: A "false" inner tunic may be utilized by adding an additional edge layer under the edge of the outer tunic around the neck and chest area in lieu of an actual additional tunic.)

- The outer tunic is made from the same black material as the hood and cape.
- It is a sleeveless tunic that reaches to mid thigh.
- The left side of the tunic crosses over the right side in the front.
- The outer tunic is heavily tattered at the lower edge.
- The outer tunic has enough fabric to create a bunched look instead of a smooth vest appearance.
- Note: A "false" inner tunic may be utilized by adding an additional edge layer under the edge of the outer tunic around the neck and chest area in lieu of an actual additional tunic.)

- The obi is made from the same black material as the hood and cape.
- It is approximately 10 cm in width, and closes in the back.

- The belt is made from two layers of black leather or leather like material.
- The base layer is approximately 2 inches (5 cm) wide, while the narrow strap on top is approximately ½ inch (1.2 cm) wide.
- Black Chicago screws or rivets, 4 pairs in total, are used to hold the smaller belt in place, and the belt must close in the back.

- The outer skirt is made from the same black material as the hood and cape.
- The outer skirt is made of enough material to provide gathers for a voluminous appearance, and is open in the front center.
- The outer skirt hangs no less than 1 inch (2cm) from the floor with the lower edge heavily tattered.
- This skirt is visibly shorter than the inner skirting.
- (Note: For dressing convenience, the outer skirt may be attached to the inner tunic at the waist. The seam will be hidden by the outer tunic.
- Note: The outer skirt can also be attached on top of the inner skirt as a single, multi-layered skirt. This is required if the, "false" inner tunic option is utilized.)

The inner skirt is made from the same black material as the hood and cape.
Like the outer skirt, the inner skirt is made of enough material to provide gathers for a voluminous appearance, and split at the front center and is heavily tattered.
The skirt is floor length, no more than one inch from the ground and longer than the outer skirt.
(Note: The inner skirt can also be attached under the outer skirt as a single, multi-layered skirt. This is required if the "false" inner tunic method is utilized.)

- Calf high plain black boots.
- No visible straps, buckles, or laces.
- Note: boots with zippers are acceptable; however the zippers should be inconspicuous, either on the sides or back of the boot.
Optional Accessories
Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.

- The hilt resembles the COTF single bladed lightsaber hilt.
- If the lightsaber has a blade, the blade must be red in color.
- Note: The KOTOR II hilt is NOT approvable with this version.
