This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.
This is a visual guide used for 501st costume approval, not a how-to for construction. Construction details are found at the costume's Detachment website. Measurements provided here are generalized, and not criteria for approval. All 501st costumes are proportionate to the wearer in terms of size, fit, and scale. During evaluation, both text and images (CRL and Reference) must be considered. When in doubt about a feature of a submitted costume, GMLs should post questions in the Legion forum's DL/GML peer review section.
Required Costume Components
The following costume components are present and appear as described below. For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.

- The costumer's hair or wig is strawberry-blonde or natural red in color.
- The hair may reach from the shoulders to mid-back in length.

- The scarf is a long length of maroon fabric that includes a hat brim.
- The scarf may be worn draped over the shoulders, or pulled up to cover the costumer’s hair.
- The hat brim, similar in shape to the brim of a baseball cap, is made with the same orange-brown leather as the vest.

- The dark steel-gray unitard is made from a low sheen material.
- Four-way stretch material should be used to allow freedom of movement while keeping the bodysuit form fitting.
- Alternatively, dark steel-gray leggings and a long-sleeved shirt, or leggings and false sleeves may be worn to reduce the layers of fabric around the torso.

- The dress is made with maroon and black fabric.
- The long, wide sleeves are maroon.
- The torso of the dress, which can be seen under the leather vest when it is unzipped, is black.
- The skirt is made with four panels of maroon fabric, two in the front, and two in the back. The center front, center back, and sides are open.
- The skirt panels are made with enough fabric to make them appear voluminous in appearance.

- The inner vest is made with orange-toned brown leather, or a leather-like material.
- The form-fitting vest is weathered, and includes an opening in the front.

- The small outer vest is made of a very deep black fabric that reaches only to the waist.
- The vest is rounded in the front, and does not close over the chest.

- The epaulettes are made from the same orange-brown leather as the vest. They are rounded, and may be attached to either the brown or the black vest.
- The edges of the epaulettes are trimmed in gold cord or edging.
- Strings of gold beads and gold cord are draped from the front and back of the epaulettes.
- A few cords may be "broken" on the front of the left epaulette to replicate battle damage.

- The knee high boots are dark grey-brown.
- The boots have conservative heels and no visible laces or buckles.
Optional Accessories
Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.

- Green contact lenses.
- This style of contact lens may be worn, if desired.
- While encouraged to complete the look of this character, the contact lens requirement will be waived for 501st acceptance, if the applicant cannot wear contact lenses for health related reasons.
- All persons utilizing contact lenses are encouraged to first see their optometrist for a fitting.

- A DL-44 blaster may be carried.
- When not in the hand, the blaster is tucked into the front of the leather vest, where a hidden holster may be used.

- Acceptable hilts for a Mara Jade saber include Darth Vader's lightsaber, hilts designed to match images from the comics, or a hilt based on the lightsaber carried by Mara on the Decipher cards.
- The Luke Skywalker style hilt is not allowed.
- If bladed, the lightsaber blade is magenta in color.
