This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.
This is a visual guide used for 501st costume approval, not a how-to for construction. Construction details are found at the costume's Detachment website. Measurements provided here are generalized, and not criteria for approval. All 501st costumes are proportionate to the wearer in terms of size, fit, and scale. During evaluation, both text and images (CRL and Reference) must be considered. When in doubt about a feature of a submitted costume, GMLs should post questions in the Legion forum's DL/GML peer review section.
Required Costume Components
The following costume components are present and appear as described below. For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.

- The hooded, sleeveless cloak is made of black fabric that reaches the ankles.
- The inside of the cloak and hood are lined with a deep red fabric, and the hood is always worn over the head.
- The cloak is secured closed on the chest, at a point directly under the base of the throat armor.

- The costumer’s hair is dark brown, and is cut very short.
- Longer hair is accepted as long as it is completely concealed by the hood of the robe.

- The silver throat armor rests at the base of the neck. It is designed with a curve that goes up and around the throat, and there is a square shaped notch taken from the top center.
- The silver chest armor is made from two pieces that are mirrored in shape.
- Each piece has a gentle curve to follow the shape of the chest, and they are made with a material that gives the appearance of solid, sturdy armor.
- The armor is attached to the padding from the back side, and has no visible attachment points on the front.

- The silver shoulder bells are made from a sturdy, solid material.
- They are curved to follow the shape of the upper arms.
- Brown or maroon straps are used to hold the shoulder bells in place.

Flak Vest and Armor Padding
- The dark charcoal flak vest has vertical lines quilted onto the front and back.
- The partial sleeves are vertically quilted.
- The vest is long enough to stay tucked into the obi sash.
- The vest may be constructed with leather, a leatherette material, or a heavy, medium sheen fabric such as tackle twill.
- Black padding is worn over the vest, under the chest armor.
- This fitted padding covers the chest, shoulders, and upper back.

- The long sleeved shirt is made of a matte black fabric.
- The shirt is form-fitting.

- Black leather gloves are worn over the sleeves of the shirt.
- The gauntlet style gloves have no buckles or extra decoration.

- The black leather belt is worn at a slight angle, as if the lightsaber worn on the right is pulling that side down.
- The base belt is approximately 8 cm wide.
- Two thin belts, each approximately 2.5 cm wide, are worn over the base belt. These belts are held in place with black leather belt keepers which are spaced at intervals around the waist.
- Both of the small belts have a side-release buckle at the center front.
- A pentagon shaped silver plate is located just to the right side of the side release buckles. It is as wide as the base belt, and it covers both of the smaller belts.
- A small black leather pouch hangs from the top of the belt to the left side of the side release buckles.
- A Covertec lightsaber clip is located on the right side of the belt.
- The belt closes in the back.

- The obi is made of black leather or leatherette material.
- The center front area of the obi is slightly wider than the rest.

- The ankle length skirt is made of heavy black material.
- In the front, the skirt is closed at the waist. Below that, the front of the skirt hangs open.
- The inside of the skirt is lined with the same dark red fabric as the cloak.

- Embellished sash pieces are worn beneath the skirt.
- These sashes hang directly beneath the front opening of the skirt.
- They are made with a light charcoal fabric that is decorated with very light gray edge trim and designs that match the reference images.
- The sashes are not part of the skirt, but they may be lightly tacked to the edge of the skirt material to keep them in place while the costume is worn.

- Black pants with a relaxed fit are worn tucked into the boots.

- Vertically striped greaves similar to those worn by Anakin are worn over the front of the boots.
- The greaves are made with a charcoal color that is lighter than the color of the flak vest.
- Two black leather straps are wrapped around the top area of each greave to hold it in place.

- The knee high black boots have no visible buckles or laces when they are covered with the greaves and boot armor.

- A silver armor plate is worn over the top of the boots.
- The plate is held in place by a dark charcoal colored strap that goes under the sole of the boot.
- Alternatively, the boots may be covered by an extension of the greaves, which is held in place by a dark charcoal colored strap that goes under the sole of the boot.
