This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.
This is a visual guide used for 501st costume approval, not a how-to for construction. Construction details are found at the costume's Detachment website. Measurements provided here are are generalized, and not criteria for approval. All 501st costumes are proportionate to the wearer in terms of size, fit, and scale. During evaluation, both text and images (CRL and Reference) must be considered. When in doubt about a feature of a submitted costume, GMLs should post questions in the Legion forum's DL/GML peer review section.
Required Costume Components
The following costume components are present and appear as described below. For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.

- Simulated bone skull cap including two eye sockets.
- On the center of the forehead is a gloss translucent inset piece affixed with screen accurate metal clips.
- An iron-colored 'spark plug' greeblie protrudes from the top back of skull.
- There is an iron-colored 'disc break' greeblie centered on the back of the head. Its upper edge is set-in under the back arch of the skull cap.
- The inset eyes are round, reflective metal or simulated metal and are connected at three points.
- There is a gas-mask style faceplate, blue grey in color/screen accurate markings and weathered with six vents and four circular ports.
- The circular ear details include antennae and greeblie details.
- Markings and moderate weathering must match screen references.

- Vertical strips of suede or suede-cloth are top stitched into a form fitting balaclava to conceal the wearer's skin and hair completely.
- The suede has a rough pilled texture and is mid-dark tone tan in colour.
- Padded 'ear muff' details sit over the ears and cradle the circular ear greeblies.

- The tubes taper from the face mask to approximately 3/4 inches.
- The tubes are weathered silver metal with black bushings.

- A weathered tan mesh scarf must be present.
- Scarf mesh squares are no larger than 1/4 inches.

- The tunic is composed of long-sleeve ripstop nylon with raised piping.
- Visible front piping should match screen references.
- Clear vacuformed shoulder bells with accurate etching and coloring affix with hex bolts to the tunic.
- Weathered in motor oil type breakdown, heaviest on the front apron.

- Replica gasket greeblie present on upper right chest.
- Raw iron in colour.

X-wing style chest box, dark gray in color.
The box is attached by two mid tone grey 1 inch leather straps with two silver slide buckles.
A third tapered hose runs from the bottom of the box to a large Spanish pouch on the wearer's back right side.
Heavily-weathered to match screen used piece.

- 3 inch dark brown leather belt
- 4 Spanish style front pouches with no visible closures.
- 2 larger Spanish style back pouches: the right pouch receives mask and chest box hose; the left pouch receives the left mask hose.
- 2 non-centered buckles and rivet details are present.
- 2 iron-colored flare greeblies are fixed with leather straps.
- 2 strap and buckle closures are present in the rear approximately 1/2 inch wide.
- 1 inch brown leather straps swag over each hip from front to back.

- Full length brown pants that are or have the appearance of being insulated.
- 3 -2 1/2 inch wide stacked horizontal pads run across each knee from inseam to side seam.
- 15-20 rows of horizontal piping runs across the inside of the knee from inseam to side seam.
- Pants are worn tucked into boots.
- Pants are distressed and dirty, heavily weathered to a worn sheen like finish.

- The gloves are dark brown/ black leather or cloth and are fitted.
- Simulated carved-bone covers the back of of the hand and tops of finger joints.
- Each hand has one male metal popper greeblie visible.
- Heavily weathered.

- The boots are above ankle-height, dark brown leather.
- Open buckles and straps are visible.
- Heavily weathered.
Optional Accessories
Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.

- The rifle has a primary barrel with a secondary barrel under it.
- There are leather wrappings around the stock and the butt.
